Obesity Epidemic - Adult & Children Population Issues
- Approximately 50% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.
- Economic impact of obesity on the U.S. economy is estimated to be over $225 billion dollars annually and rising.
- Obesity and related health problems are currently estimated to consume between 12 -15% of the national health care costs and are estimated to be 25-30% of those costs by 2016.
- Among U.S. adults (gatekeepers/parents), obesity has ballooned exponentially from forty-six percent to over sixty-four percent between 1980 and 2000.
- Debilitating affects of obesity range from type-2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, several forms of cancer, sleep apnea, hypertension, and other related chronic diseases.
