Childhood Obesity - Causes Are Multiple in Nature
- Increased availability of and access to unhealthy highly processed foods and beverages
- Increased viewing and usage of TV and/or computers.
- Increase in unsafe and unaffordable physical activities.
- Environmental factors: these factors are a combination of life-style, cultural, emotional (mental health care, self-image, and eating disorders), economic, and geographic factors.
- Increased reliance on mechanical devices for transportation.
- Genetics plays a role in approximately 15-22% of obesity cases.
- Marketplace nutritional and physical activity misinformation and false promises.
- Parents and children are largely uninformed and in many cases an ill-informed target audience regarding nutrition and physical activity.
